Construction or renovation is determined to be carbon neutral by offsetting the intrinsic carbon of the construction or renovation project through the purchase of carbon credits. The amount of carbon to be offset is determined by a life cycle analysis (LCA) of the construction or renovation project according to ISO 14040-44.
LCA is an approach that takes into account potential environmental impacts in the design and development of a product, service or building. This approach takes these impacts into account throughout its life cycle: from resource extraction to end of life.
Carbon neutrality is important in order to reduce the greenhouse effect caused mainly by CO2. But when it is not possible to reduce at the source, we can offset the emissions by purchasing carbon credits from other projects which are carbon sinks. Carbon sinks absorb carbon from the atmosphere like reforestation and agriculture projects. To learn more about greenhouse gas offset projects, you can refer to Planetair.ca
To obtain this Carbon Neutral certification, a verification must be carried out by the Taïga Initiative™ of the LCA report and the purchase of carbon credits. When the verification of the LCA report and the purchase of carbon credits shows that everything is in conformity, the certification of the Taïga Initiative is delivered for promotion and the project is added to the register of certified projects online.
